Theory Of Writing

Theory of Writing

Throughout the course of my education, I have found that our style of writing is always developing. From the first essay I wrote this semester to the last one, the way I introduced my ideas and information changed. The way I subconsciously choose to write can give me a completely different result compared a planned essay. Although initially, I did not notice that throughout this course my writing has improved. I became comfortable with how I write as well as understanding what process of writing works better for me. I developed my theory of writing by combining elements and strategies learned while writing all four major assignments. My theory of writing is simple; “The gut must be fed, the heart must be inspired, and the brain must be thrust”.

I began composing my theory from the first assignment, the Art Narrative Essay. In this assignment I was able to go back in time to recall all past memories regarding art, music, and dance. In my art narrative essay, I was inspired to write and release all happy emotions and thoughts that were reflected in my essay. Here I was able to gather one important element in my theory, “the heart must be inspired’. I was also able to take into practice an activity that was usually done in class. This was to continue to write until you can longer write. This was a great activity that trained your brain to write anything that came across your mind, whether it made sense or not. The purpose was that no idea should escape, and you can always go back and revise. It is one of the important things that I will continue to practice as it will help me improve the way I express myself and my thoughts.

The Analytical Essay was the hardest assignments in the course of the semester. However, I was able to learn and expand my knowledge not only about my topic but about the process of writing in general. One of the most important elements that I learned while writing my analytical essay was to increase your knowledge. It is important to spend half of your time researching and reading reliable sources on a topic you might find interesting before constructing your topic question. This way you will find it easier to find examples to support and answer your topic question. It is also a great habit to continue throughout any of your other courses. My experience writing my analytical essay helped me develop my theory of writing. “…And the brain must be thrust” there is never enough information you can learn. As young writers we should push ourselves and have an open mind for new ideas to improve your understanding. Another important part of my whole experience while writing and submitting this assignment is that there is always something to improve. One should never be embarrassed to seek help and let other people read your work.

The two-genre assignment is great example of a combination of all three parts. To complete this assignment, as a writer we should explore genres that one might have thought you were not be able to do. The only difficult part in this assignment to actually be in the shoes of an author. For example, when writing an essay, we normally do not direct our work to a specific audience. As a result of writing the genre assignments we are able to relay on everything we have learned and gathered throughout the other assignments. In this assignment I was I learned to trust my instincts. This element is very important there are times in which I have a writer’s block, and although I like what I have contributed to my essay I doubt it.

All four assignments contributed to my theory of writing, including this essay. Every writer has their own theory, we all have different ways to approach an assignment. In my case, I will be using my theory of writing for my future classes since it does not limit to a specific type of essay. There are many other important factors that are essential to an essay. For example, planning, writing, and rewriting. By planning one is creating an outline to organize and build a structure to the essay. The next step is to write, this will become your draft. Finally, you will be able to revise by adding and removing parts of the essay. Writing will always to take time and through every writing one is learning new ways to make it better than the last. My theory of writing will follow me through my college journey although I will always be open for new ideas.
